MOLY-NRG® Plating Action and Reduced Friction

MOLY-NRG® is a “lamellar solid” metallic lubricant that has extraordinary properties. It has a melting point almost twice that of steel. It is able to support compressive loads of over 500,000 psi – well above the yield point of all except the most exotic alloy steels. It has a natural affinity to other metals. And most important of all, it has an extremely low coefficient of friction, lower in fact than lubricating oils!

MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants are made with the highest quality MoS2 available. There are lower quality grades of MoS2 with a substantially lower price, but these cheaper grades cannot provide the extraordinary performance of MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants. Lower quality MbS2 often has high levels of contaminants, including silica (sand) and various other metals like iron. Lower grades of MoS2 are never used in MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants because contaminants in the lower grades can hardly provide the established reputation for extraordinary performance which has become synonymous with MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants. In fact, contaminants in lower grades of MoS2 can actually be damaging to your equipment. Imagine the effect if you were to throw a handful of sand or iron dust into a gearbox or into your engine!

The reason we use the best MoS2 available is REDUCED FRICTION and UNCOMPROMISING PERFORMANCE! The “lamellar solid” structure and refinement to colloidal submicron size allows the MoS2, with its incredibly low coefficient of friction, to work its magic in reducing friction between metal surfaces.MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants can actually reduce friction up to 60%, and extend part life up to 1o times!

This tremendous performance benefit comes from the way in which MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants penetrates into the surface of the metal. The submicron sized MoS2 particles are carried into the surface of the metal by Kent Oil Company’s proprietary additive package, filling in between the asperities of the metal surface with friction fighting MoS2. As the equipment operates, the MoS2 particles, because they are “lamellar solids” of very small size, pack in between the asperities and tighter until the areas between the asperities are almost completely filled!

The benefits of this process we call it the “MOLY-NRG® Plating Action” are significant reductions in friction and wear. and increased part life. With the area between the asperities of the metal filled withMOLY-NRG®, metal to metal contact is minimized!

The next question that always comes up is about tolerances. MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants DO NOT CHANGE TOLERANCES! The lamellar structure of the MoS2 prevents the “MOLY-NRG® Plating Action” from affecting tolerances. Imagine a geek of cards that have incredibly slick surfaces. If you were to place the deck in a stack and push down on them from the top nothing would happen. If you were to give the stack a flick on the side with your finger the cards would go sliding all across the table. The same thing happens withMOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants. As the MoS2 particles fill the area between the asperities of a metal surface they only reach to the level of the highest asperities. Any particles that are higher than the highest asperities of the metal surface simply slide off the stack and are carried by the oil to a surface where they are needed.

The example of the deck of cards also shows another extremely desirable performance benefit of MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants – load distribution. Take for instance, a ball mill coal pulverizer from a power generating plant. Imagine a metal tube eight feet in diameter and about 60 feet long filled with over 100 tons of steel balls. Now imagine this long tube being rotated by an electric motor attached to a gearbox about the size of an office desk·. As you can imagine, those gears in the gear box are under tremendous loads, and the teeth of those gears need to be well lubricated!

Remember how we talked about how “MOLY-NRG® Plating Action” fills the area between the asperities of the metal surface with MoS2, thereby reducing friction. The same “MOLY-NRG® Plating Action” also helps reduce the load on the gear teeth. No MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants don’t magically make the 100 tons of steel balls weigh only 50 tons, what it does do is spread the load over a greater surface area. As the gears rotate, the highest metal asperities break through the lubricating oil film and the load is concentrated in these contact points. The result is extreme friction and wear. When MOLY-NRG® Treatments and Lubricants are used, the MoS2 that is packed into the area between the asperities distributes these concentrated loads over a much larger area. The result is a significant reduction in friction and wear, and this translates to longer equipment part life and reduced energy consumption!

In commercial and industrial applications, energy savings and longer equipment part life are critical aspects of lubricant performance. The difference between a lubricant that meets minimum specifications and a lubricant that provides the highest possible level of protection and maximum lubrication can easily result in savings amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars! For example, a big industrial gear box can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, and extending bearing or gear life can mean tremendous savings, not to mention the man-hours and lost productivity. Energy savings are a direct drop in operation costs, EVERY DOLLAR OF ENERGY SAVINGS IS A DOLlAR OF INCREASED PROFITS! If you are in the power generating business, every kwh drop in auxiliary load is a kwh increase in saleable capacity or available power!
